Introduction

What is a download and why do you need it?

A download is a file that you transfer from the internet to your device. You may download files for various reasons, such as:

  • To save a copy of a document, image, video, or audio file that you want to view or listen offline.

  • To install an app, game, or software update that is not available on the App Store.

  • To open an attachment from an email or a message.

  • To backup or transfer data from one device to another.

Downloading files can help you save time, bandwidth, and storage space. However, it can also pose some challenges, such as:

  • Finding the downloaded files on your iPhone.

  • Managing the downloaded files and keeping them organized.

  • Deleting the downloaded files that you no longer need.

  • Changing the download settings to suit your preferences.

In the following sections, we will address these challenges and show you how to handle downloads on your iPhone like a pro.

How to find downloads on your iPhone

Downloads on iPhone are stored in the Files app, which can be found on the Home Screen or by swiping down and typing "file" in the search bar. In the Files app, tap on the iCloud Drive folder or the On My iPhone folder, depending on where the files are saved. Then, tap on the Downloads folder to see all the downloaded files.

You can also use the Spotlight search to find a specific file by its name. Swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen and type the file name in the search bar. You will see the matching results from various sources, including the Files app. Tap on the file to open it.

For some file types, such as images, music, or apps, you may need to use a different app to access them. For example, if you download an image from Safari, it will be saved in the Photos app. If you download a song from iTunes, it will be saved in the Music app. If you download an app from a website, it will be saved in the Home Screen. To find these files, open the corresponding app and look for them in your albums, playlists, or folders.

How to pause, resume, or cancel downloads in Safari

If you are downloading a file from Safari and you want to pause, resume, or cancel it, you can do so by tapping on the download icon at the top right corner of Safari. This icon looks like a downward arrow with a circle around it. Tap on it and you will see a list of your current and previous downloads. To pause a download, tap on the X button next to it. To resume a download, tap on the curved arrow button next to it. To cancel a download, tap on Clear and then tap Clear Download List.

How to change the default download location in Safari

By default, Safari saves your downloads in iCloud Drive. This means that your downloads will be synced across your devices and available in the Files app. However, you can also choose to save your downloads in a different location, such as On My iPhone, Dropbox, or Google Drive. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Open Safari and tap on the Settings icon at the bottom right corner.

  • Scroll down and tap on Safari.

  • Scroll down and tap on Downloads.

  • Tap on the location that you want to use as your default download location. You can also tap on Other... to select a custom folder.

Note that changing the default download location will only affect the future downloads, not the ones that are already saved in iCloud Drive.

How to delete downloads from your iPhone

If you want to delete downloads from your iPhone to free up some storage space or to protect your privacy, you can do so by using the Files app or the corresponding app that stores the files. For example, if you want to delete an image that you downloaded from Safari, you can use the Photos app to delete it. If you want to delete a document that you downloaded from an email, you can use the Files app to delete it. Here are the general steps to delete downloads from your iPhone:

  • Open the Files app or the corresponding app that stores the files.

  • Find the file that you want to delete and tap on it.

  • Tap on the Share icon at the bottom left corner.

  • Scroll down and tap on Delete.

  • Confirm that you want to delete the file by tapping on Delete again.

Note that deleting a file from your iPhone will also remove it from iCloud Drive and other devices that are synced with your iCloud account. If you want to keep a copy of the file in iCloud Drive, you can move it to a different folder before deleting it from your iPhone.

How to enable or disable automatic downloads

If you have multiple devices that are connected to your Apple ID, such as an iPad, a Mac, or an Apple TV, you can choose to automatically download apps, books, music, podcasts, or updates that you purchase or download on one device to all of your devices. This can help you save time and keep your devices updated. To enable or disable automatic downloads, follow these steps:

  • Open Settings and tap on your name at the top.

  • Tap on iTunes & App Store.

  • Under Automatic Downloads, toggle on or off the switches for Apps, Books, Music, Podcasts, or Updates.

Note that enabling automatic downloads will use cellular data if Wi-Fi is not available. To avoid this, you can toggle off Use Cellular Data under Automatic Downloads.

How to choose the file format for downloads

Sometimes, you may encounter files that have different formats for the same type of content. For example, images can be in JPEG, PNG, GIF, or other formats. Music can be in MP3, AAC, WAV, or other formats. Documents can be in PDF, DOCX, TXT, or other formats. Depending on your needs and preferences, you may want to choose a specific format for your downloads. To do this, follow these steps:

  • Open Safari and go to the website that has the file that you want to download.

  • Tap and hold on the file link until a menu pops up.

  • Tap on Download Linked File As...

Select the format that you want to use for your download. If the format is not available, you may need to use a different app or websi
