Plot

The film revolves around Subbaiah, a poor Brahmin priest who lives by performing Tiladaanam, a ritual of accepting the sins of the dead in exchange for coins and food. He faces the scorn of his neighbors and relatives for his lowly occupation. His son, Raghuram, is a Naxalite who fights against the oppression of the lower castes and classes. His daughter-in-law, Padma, lives with him and supports his work. Raghuram visits his home secretly during his child's birth, but is soon chased by the police. He decides to surrender to the police in order to get compensation for his family, but his father dies of shock after hearing this news. Padma waits in vain for the compensation and struggles to survive.

Review

Tiladaanam is a powerful and realistic film that depicts the plight of the marginalized sections of society. The film does not shy away from showing the harsh realities of caste discrimination, police brutality, and political corruption. The film also questions the relevance of traditional rituals and values in a changing world. The film has a documentary-like style that enhances its authenticity and impact.

The performances of the actors are commendable, especially H. G. Dattatreya as Subbaiah, who portrays the dignity and agony of his character with subtlety and grace. Brahmaji as Raghuram is convincing as a rebel who sacrifices his life for a cause. Tanikella Bharani as Subbaiah's brother-in-law and Jaya Seal as Padma are also impressive in their roles.

The film has a minimalist soundtrack composed by L. Vaidyanathan that suits the mood and tone of the film. The cinematography by Sunny Joseph is effective in capturing the contrast between the urban and rural settings of the film. The editing by A. Sreekar Prasad is crisp and smooth.
